Struggle for Life: Living Under Israeli Occupation
with Adam Shapiro & Huwaida Arraf
*********************************************************************
Peace activist couple, Adam Shapiro, a Jewish-American, and Huwaida
Arraf, a Palestinian-American, founded the International Solidarity
Movement (ISM) at the start of the current Palestinian uprising. ISM is
a Palestinian-led movement utilizing nonviolent, direct-action methods
to challenge the illegal Israeli occupation.
On February 11th, NAAP invites you to experience this powerful and
insightful presentation. Shapiro and Arraf will share their accounts of
the humiliation and injustices suffered by the Palestinians under
Israeli occupation.
Tuesday, February 11th - 7:00pm sharp.
Columbia University, LAW School
1125 Amsterdam Ave (between 115th and 116th St.)
Shapiro is currently a Ph.D. candidate in International Relations at
American University in Washington, DC He holds an MA in Arab Studies
from Georgetown University and an MA in Politics from New York
University. Huwaida Arraf graduated from the University of Michigan with
a degree in Judaic and Arabic studies and went on to study Hebrew at the
Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Adam and Huwaida met as nonviolent
activists in Palestine and were married in May of 2002.
In the struggle for Palestinian freedom, Shapiro and Arraf have
challenged Israeli curfews and defied Israeli snipers by walking the
streets and delivering food and medicine. They have been beaten and
arrested by Israeli forces, and in the spring of 2002 Shapiro made
headlines when he was trapped overnight in Palestinian President Yasser
Arafat's besieged Presidential Compound in Ramallah as he tried to
secure ambulance access to the compound.
The fact that Shapiro is an American who risks his life for Palestinian
freedom has angered critics and earned him notoriety in the corporate
media: New York Post has called him the "Jewish Taliban" while Fox News'
John Gibson accused him of being a "turncoat". Shapiro's family has been
forced to temporarily relocate due to numerous threats. Come and hear
the story and the facts for yourself.
