DETAILS: Come hear activists from the Black Panthers to Project South speak on the growing parallels between the Arab and African-American experiences, with a focus on how our groups can collaborate on community activism, both globally and locally. Come with creative energy to formulate strategies for coalition-building with these seasoned activists:

WHAT: Where is the Palestinian Gandhi? A Conversation with Bill Fletcher, Jr.

DETAILS: As part of the Global Week in action for Palestinian Political Prisoners (April 11-April 17, 2010), Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine (C-SJP) invites you to learn more about the Palestinian struggle in relation to other struggles for freedom, justice and equality.
Bill Fletcher, Jr. will discuss Israeli Apartheid and Palestinian peaceful resistance to Israeli's occupation. In addition,he will debunk the notion that there is a lack of peaceful Palestinian resistance and draw parallels between the Palestinian movement and other historical movements for underrepresented groups struggling for justice and equality.
According to Mr. Fletcher, there is a frequent tendency to misrepresent Palestinian activists as extremists who threaten life and property. "Recent arrests of Palestinian human rights activists Jamal Juma', Abdallah Abu Rahma, Ibrahim Amirah and Mohammed Othman are prime examples.

In addition, they will discuss Israeli policies in Jerusalem and its impact on Palestinians.

DETAILS: Join us for the screening of “Intifada NYC” which will be followed by a panel discussion with Debbie Almontaser, her lawyer Alan Levine, & director/producer of the documentary David Teague.
This event is the first screening of “Intifada NYC” in NY following the determination of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) that found city officials discriminated against Ms. Almontaser "on account of her race, religion and national origin" by removing her as interim principal of the Khalil Gibran International Academy in 2007 and disqualifying her for the permanent position
as principal of that Arabic language school.

WHAT: Musical Performance: From Rabat to Baghdad: An Evening of Arab Folk Music featuring TARAB

DETAILS: Founded in 1998, Tarab is an group of New York-based musicians who focus on the classical Arab music repertoire, both instrumental, with such genres as samai, lunga, dulab, and vocal, with special emphasis on the Andalusi Muwashah and Sufi repertoire. The ensemble also explores traditional folk music from various regions of the Arab world. Importance is given to improvisation, both vocal and instrumental, to allow each musician to explore the maqamat, or scales. The sets performed are generally in the form of a wasla, which is a suite of several pieces all sharing the same maqam. Since its foundation, Tarab has performed at several venues and festivals, such as Symphony Space, The Great Hall at Cooper Union, The Joseph Papp Theater, Bowery Ballroom, The Balkan Music Festival, Club Passim, York University Toronto and The University of Michigan. Tarab has also composed soundtracks for two documentaries and one play.

WHAT: MS WALK 2010...walk with NAAP-NY's Team Hassoub

DETAILS: The Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Walk is a walk to raise money for the fight against a disease of the central nervous system. Every person that participates raises money in order to continue research into the cause and cure of this disease. The walk will take place on Sunday, April 18, 2010 in Manhattan.
For the sixth year, NAAP-NY will be walking under Team HASSOUB and Tania G. Chalhoub will be the NAAP-NY Team Captain. The name 'Hassoub' comes from Hasib, Tania's father's name. He is her inspiration and the reason she started walking in the fight against MS.
