Why Learn Arabic?

Arabic is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It is the official language of 22 countries and the native language of more than 300 million people. Yet, as of 1998, only 5,500 American college students were studying Arabic, and only a small number of them became advanced enough to use the language professionally. Proficiency in any foreign language, especially Arabic, can advance your career and make you more competitive in the job market. Many Washington, DC-based corporations, organizations, and government institutions (e.g., World Bank, State Department) list proficiency in Arabic as a required or desirable skill for many exciting careers.

Arabic Language Immersion Program

If you ever had an interest in learning Arabic and you live in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, then you may want to consider enrolling in the Arabic Language Immersion Program. This program was created by the Network of Arab-American Professionals in response to the overwhelming demand we have received for quality Arabic language instruction. We understand that Arabic can be a challenging language to learn and have designed a program that we feel will provide a solid foundation for communicating in Arabic.

The program consists of both formal instruction and immersion sessions. It is the latter that makes this program truly unique. During the immersion sessions, you will spend 3 classes per semester immersed in an Arabic-speaking social group at a local Arabic cafe or restaurant. In these settings, you will have the opportunity to practice your Arabic speaking and listening skills in a very natural way. You will be expected to greet people, participate in a group conversation, place an order for dinner, and perform other basic functions. The members of your social group are trained to correct and help you refine your speaking skills, while expanding your vocabulary.
