NAAP-Boston Events Haiti Relief By Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) & ACCESS
Haiti Relief
As a service to the Arab American donor community, the Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) researched various humanitarian relief organizations currently addressing Haiti's needs and are highlighting six that we feel are meeting the most critical survival issues: American Red Cross, CARE, Catholic Relief Services, Doctors Without Borders, Mercy Corps, and Oxfam America. More information on these organziations is listed HERE
CAAP is a national program that harnesses the collective power of Arab American giving to strengthen the voice of our community. During this time of crisis in Haiti, Arab Americans can choose to give together through CAAP. By pooling your funds with other generous Arab American donors you strengthen your contribution, making a larger and more effective impact. You are recognized as an Arab American donor, while collectively supporting the people of Haiti.
If you are interested in donating, we would like to suggest the following option:
Use CAAP's free donor advised services by contributing on-line to CAAP and designating the recipient humanitarian relief organization. CAAP will forward the full amount in your name to the organization of your choice. Or, if you don't wish to designate the recipient organization, allow CAAP to make the selection in your name.

Leadership Update: Fellowship Opportunity & White House Jobs
February 1st, 2010
1- Meetings with DoJ & DHS
2- White House Jobs Update
3- International Fellowship; Deadline Approaching!
4- The PATRIOT Act
5- New York City Town Hall Forum
6- 2010 Census Update
1) Meetings with Attorney General Holder and DHS Secretary Napolitano
Last week, we met with Attorney General Eric Holder, along with ADC and MPAC, to discuss a wide range of issues of concern to our communities, including NSEERS, the PATRIOT Act, and other related issues. Our leaders proposed several ideas for broadening engagement opportunities between law enforcement and local communities, as well as deepening existing partnerships with the Department of Justice, both in Washington and cities around the country. Regular input from community leaders on reforming controversial policies, such as the 2003 Guidance on Racial Profiling and the DIOGs; community representation on policy working groups and advisory boards; and partnering to develop education and training programs at schools and universities are some of the opportunities for cooperation put forward during the discussion. Attorney General Holder was very helpful, emphasizing from experience that profiling is neither helpful from a law enforcement perspective, nor desirable from a civil rights one (click here to view the press release issued about the meeting). AAI President Jim Zogby also met with DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano last week, as part of ongoing meetings between AAI and the Department of Homeland Security, seeking further clarification of the full implications of the new TSA regulations for our community. We will keep you posted on the details as we get them.
2) White House Jobs Update
The White House is still in the process of hiring and making appointments. At recent meetings on personnel matters, we were reminded that the process can be slow, and each agency is at a different stage of hiring, but there is increased pressure to move the hiring process along for existing vacancies and anticipated openings. If you have previously applied for an appointment through www.whitehouse.gov, then your information and application are still there. The White House is working to increase communication with candidates, but if you have a specific question or concern, we can help get you answers. Please contact Hilary at hrobertson@... if:
You want to update your resume, personal information, or your job/appointment preferences
You want to submit your resume for a job or appointment
You have not heard back from the White House but would like to express your continued interest in an appointment
You have a question about your candidacy for a specific appointment or job
If you have submitted your resume to us but still have not applied through whitehouse.gov, you must apply through the White House website so your information is officially in their system. Go to https://app2.whitehouse.gov/ppo/ to begin your application. Please look through the Plum Book (http://www.gpoaccess.gov/plumbook/2008/index.html) for job listings and descriptions. The 2008 edition is the most recent edition, and it will not be updated again until 2012.
Tips from the Office of Presidential Personnel:
- Make your resume clear, descriptive, and concise to make it easy for them to find the information they need. This includes dates of jobs held (not just years, like 2004-2007), educational information including degree and date of graduation, and your specific functions and policy areas of expertise. For example, if you are an attorney, do you deal with labor laws? Tax issues? Healthcare lawsuits? Be as specific as you can be.
- Along the same lines, be specific in your accomplishments. If you are discussing your management experience, make sure to state what size budgets you manage or how many people you supervise.
- Utilize the space provided in the online application by adding descriptions with pertinent keywords. Different agencies search the database in different ways, so make sure they can find you.
- Be specific about what position you want, and which agency you want to work in. You will still be considered for other positions, but it helps the White House understand what type of job you are looking for, and it also helps them evaluate your qualifications for the job you're seeking. Also, be realistic in what you are qualified to apply for. If you apply to twelve different agencies and multiple jobs at each agency, you are doing yourself a disservice.
The bottom line: it up to you to show them that you are the ideal candidate for the position. Be clear and concise, and make it easy for the White House to see how qualified you are for the position you apply for.
3) International Fellowship; Deadline Approaching!
The deadline is rapidly approaching for a truly excellent fellowship opportunity for accomplished and influential young professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are active in politics (local, national, or international), civil society organizations, media, the business sector, local communities, faith-based movements, or other fields.
The Alliance of Civilizations International Fellowship Program (AoCIF) will take six Europeans and six North Americans to the MENA region, as well as twelve Middle Easterners and North Africans to Europe and the United States. The program will be based on the Marshall Memorial Fellowship, run by the GMF for over twenty seven years, GMF's partners on the AoCIF program are the Alliance of Civilizations of the United Nations, the League of Arab States, the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the British Council.
Both groups will meet policymakers and academics, visit research centers and NGOs, in addition to meeting their counterparts depending on their field of interest.
For more information, including guidelines and criteria, please visit http://www.gmfus.org/aocif.
The deadline for applications is this Sunday, February 7th.
4) The PATRIOT Act
This Wednesday, AAI is collaborating with the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, along with a broad coalition, in putting together a lobby day to encourage the reform of the PATRIOT Act in a direction that will guarantee our constitutional rights. The lobby day on February 3rd "will include a morning briefing, advice on how to talk to your members of Congress, sessions with issue experts, meetings with your senators and representative, and an afternoon debrief." You can sign the letter promoting amendments to incorporate into the PATRIOT Act, or click here for more details. If anyone in the greater DC area is interested in getting involved in Wednesday's lobby day, please contact Omar Baddar via email at obaddar@..., or by phone at 202.429.9210 ext. 13.
5) New York City Town Hall Forum
On February 17th, AAI will be hosting a Town Hall forum in New York titled "Immigration Reform, Civil Liberties, and National Security," in collaboration with several local organizations. The event will host elected officials, policymakers, and community leaders to discuss the implications of the shifting immigration and national security policies for our community. Opening remarks will be delivered by Fatima Shama, Immigrant Affairs Commissioner at the New York City Mayor's Office. Based on the feedback of local groups, more than 150 people are estimated to be in attendance.
6) 2010 Census Update
AAI's "Trusted Voices" Public Service Announcement about the 2010 Census is on the verge of release, with endorsements from 19 partner organizations around the country. It will run both on television and in print, and if you know a media outlet that would be interested in showing the PSA, please let us know. Also, a reminder that AAI's Arab American Toolkit for the 2010 Census is now available online at www.aaiusa.org/census-toolkit. The Toolkit will help Arab American community leaders and activists do outreach and encourage participation in the upcoming Census. It includes extensive appendices in both English and Arabic; the online version will be updated to reflect national resources we hear about and partnership developments in the regions. A print version of the Toolkit is available to download.

| Al-Kindi Ensemble & The Whirling Derviches in Concert!
The Center of Arabic Culture is sponsoring the Al-Kindi Ensemble & The Whirling Derviches concert on September 20th, 2008 at Sanders Theatre at Harvard in Cambridge. Don't miss this historic event for a group touring the U.S.
"Al-Kindi troupe brings tradition back to Baalbeck
The Daily Star - Lebanon - August 21, 2000
Masters of oriental music bring a close to this year's festival
An evening of religious and secular music by the Ensemble Al-Kindî entranced and invigorated audience members to mark the last performance of this year's Baalbeck Festival.
Sitting amongst a lavishly decorated stage, draped in oriental rugs, the ensemble played two sets for a total of two and a half hour. Watching the rigid, technical expertise of French-born Julien Weiss on the qanoun contributed to the trance-like atmosphere even more so than the chanting of the vocalists...
Weiss demonstrated he is the ensemble's leader not only in name as his performance on the qanoun established the pace and direction of most songs...
Sarmini demonstrated why he's considered by many to be one of the most talented singers in Syria.
