8/14 - 8/31: End the Cycle of Violence - Join the Cycle for Peace!

The Peace Cycle 2008

Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine causes a brutal cycle of violence that affects the lives of every Palestinian civilian and prevents any chance of peace in the Middle East.

The Peace Cycle 2008 is a unique campaign to mark the 60th anniversary of ‘al Nakba’ – the Palestinian ‘catastrophe’ when the ethnic cleansing of Palestine began in 1948.

The Peace Cycle in Palestine:
This is an amazing opportunity for cyclists to visit Palestine to show solidarity, cycle alongside Palestinian cyclists and learn about the realities of life under occupation.

When?
14th August to 31st August 2008

Where?
Starting in Amman, Jordan, and cycling through Arab villages in Israel, then touring the occupied West Bank meeting with groups, individuals and families, and ending in Jerusalem

How?
Cyclists must raise the costs of the trip plus a donation towards humanitarian charities in Palestine.

This year, the Peace Cycle will raise funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians. MAP is a UK charity providing support to the health and medical needs of vulnerable Palestinians living in Gaza, the West Bank and across the Middle East. *

We will then take our campaign for justice to the European Parliament

The Peace Cycle in Europe:
Cyclists from all over Europe will converge on Brussels for 2 days of media events and demonstrations to demand the European Parliament takes action to end the occupation and give peace a chance in the Middle East.

When?
Sunday 7th – Tuesday 9th September 2008

Where?
The European Parliament, Brussels

How?
Arrive in Brussels by Sunday 7th September 2008

For more information on taking part in TPC2008

email cyclists@thepeacecycle.com for a cyclists information pack.

TPC2008 will raise money to fund a MAP mobile health clinic for a year.
These clinics are becoming ever more vital to Palestinians whose movement throughout the West Bank is increasingly difficult and restricted by the occupying forces.

See www.map-uk.com for further details.

Ali Abunimah Talk - Palestine/Israel: Peace or Apartheid?

with introduction by Professor Elaine Hagopian

Ali Abunimah, cofounder of Electronic Intifada, is a writer and commentator on Middle East and Arab-American affairs. His forthcoming book, entitled "One Country" (Metropolitan Books) argues that efforts to partition Palestine/Israel into separate states actually fuel the conflict and that peace can only come when the country is united into a single state guaranteeing equal rights and protections for both Israelis and Palestinians. The book is scheduled to be published in September 2006.

Abunimah's articles have appeared in The Chicago Tribune, The Daily Star (Lebanon), The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Financial Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Jordan Times among other publications. He is frequent guest on local, national and international radio and television, including CNN, Fox, MSNBC, Pacifica Radio, Radio Canada and the BBC.

Mr. Abunimah co-founded The Electronic Intifada, an internet gateway about Palestine and the Palestine-Israeli conflict (electronicIntifada.net), and Electronic Iraq (electronicIraq.net).

He lectures frequently at colleges in the United States. Mr. Abunimah was born in the United States and grew up in Europe. Both of his parents were born in Palestine, his mother in a village near Jerusalem in an area that is now in Israel, and his father in a village in the Occupied West Bank, near Bethlehem. He received his BA from Princeton University and MA from the University of Chicago.

    Recent book contributions/journal articles:
    • (with Louise Cainkar) "Migration as a Method of Coping with Turbulence among Palestinians," Journal of Comparative Family Studies, Special Issue on the Middle East, Winter. 2004.
    • "On violence and the Intifada," in "Live from Palestine," edited by Nancy Stohlman and Laurieann Aladin. Cambridge, MA: South End Press, 2003

PhD Study on Differences in Marriage Values Between Lebanese-Americans and European-Americans

I am a Lebanese American working on my PhD in Clinical Psychology at UMASS, Amherst and the topic of my dissertation is "Differences between Americans and Lebanese in their beliefs about marriage". The main purpose of this work is to give accurate and comprehensive information about the values and beliefs of Lebanese (and Arabs in general)and help decrease stereotypes and misperceptions about our culture.

I am submitting this request because I am in desperate need for help from all Arab-Americans because I neither have the necessary funds nor enough participants in my area to run an effective study. Whether you are a private individual or an Arab organization (particularly Lebanese-related) I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me out and help improve our image in America. Also, if you are married, live in the Boston area and are willing to spare about 30 minutes of your time and participate in my study sometime in March, I would be very grateful.

In terms of my personal experiences and background, I was born and raised in Lebanon and moved to the US as a permanent resident to pursue graduate studies in 2000. I have a BA in Economics and an MA in Philosophy from the American University of Beirut and an MS from the UMASS Social and Personality program.

    Thanks very much!

Her son Juliano, who directed the group, used his camera all those years to film the rehearsals and performances of the plays. Participants Needed for a Palestine Film Project

Harvard student looking for Palestinians living in Boston who would be interested in participating in a short film about the Nakba and the issue of house demolitions in Palestine.

The film will combine a fictional narrative set in Boston with documentary footage filmed in Palestine this coming April. The Boston component will tell the story of a Palestinian family whose house is to be demolished. Their struggle over whether or not to abandon the building brings up the memory of another home lost – that in Palestine, 1948.

I AM ESPECIALLY LOOKING FOR A MAN OR WOMAN IN THEIR MID-60'S OR OLDER FOR THE ROLE OF THE FATHER OR MOTHER OF THE FAMILY. If participants are interested and willing, I would like to incorporate their own family story – and the story of their house in Palestine - into the film.

NO ACTING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. Participants will be guided by professional actors and for the most part will be asked to talk about their own memories and experiences. The entire family is invited to participate. Non-Palestinian Arabs are also welcomed and encouraged to apply.

The film will be shot in Boston over a weekend in mid-March, 17-19. We will work around any needs or limitations you may have.

If you or anyone you know are interested in participating in the project or would like to know more about it, please contact me by e-mail or phone. It is my hope that this film will make a modest contribution to raising awareness for the history as well as current situation of Palestine.

Palestinian Playwright, Betty Shamieh: Reading of New Play "The Black Eyed"

There will be a reading of Betty Shamieh's latest play THE BLACK EYED at the American Repertory Theatre (64 Brattle St in Cambridge, MA) at 3 pm on Monday, March 13. Running time is 85 minutes.

A Palestinian-American playwright and performer, Betty Shamieh's play ROAR was the first play about Palestinians to premiere off-Broadway and she is currently a playwriting fellow at the Radcliffe Institute.

    Description of THE BLACK EYED

Four Arab women from across the ages meet in the afterlife. As these women ? who include the Biblical Delilah and a secular modern Arab-American - struggle to come to terms with their lives and their choices,
this shockingly funny play skewers traditional views on sex, family, and terrorism.

'From its first words, "Unanswered questions. Unquestioned answers. I do someone good dead. I do someone dead good," Shamieh's play grabs you and won't let go.'

'There's an intriguing evenhandedness to [Shamieh's] worldview. "Black Eyed" may take its name from the houris of Islamic heaven, but the afterlife where these women meet is full of Jews, Christians and Buddhists, too.'
    - San Francisco Chronicle

'This play by Palestinian-American Betty Shamieh is a chillingly beautiful piece about the relationship between violence and seduction.'
    -SF Weekly

"The Songs of Sheikh Sayyed Darweesh" Tribute Concert and Tour

Xauen Music (http://www.xauen-music.com) is proud to announce its upcoming nationwide tour, "The Songs of Sheikh Sayyed Darweesh," featuring the Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble with guest vocalists Youssef Kassab and Rozann Khoury. The tour is presented in conjunction with the release of the CCOE's new CD, "The Songs of Sayyed Darweesh: Soul of a People."

Sheikh Sayyed Darweesh is widely acknowledged as "the father of modern Arab music;" his songs and style have enchanted the Arab world since the early 20th century. He was the spokesman for a developing Egyptian identity at a key transitional time in history, the quest for independence. Darweesh was well-known for his witty, original, and humorous personality and for his tireless work. He was a singer, actor, and a composer. He composed a repertoire of hundreds of songs spanning a wide range of genres during his seven-year career, cut short by his death at the age of thirty-one.

The Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble's tour aims to recreate the ambience of Darweesh's era and immerse audiences in music and ideas that are relevant today. The acoustic ensemble is composed of Oriental instruments such as qanun, 'ud (lute), riqq (Arab tambourine), and nay (flute) and Western classical instruments such as violin and cello, as well as male and female vocals.

ADC ACTION ALERT - Aid to Palestinian People in Jeopardy

Washington, DC, February 2, 2005--The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) opposes growing calls to suspend financial aid to the Palestinian people following the results of the parliamentary elections in Palestine on January 25. ADC urges you to contact the White House, Congress, and State Department to voice your concerns:

    BACKGROUND:
ADC believes that calls to upset this precarious balance and stop aid to the Palestinians will only resulted in greater hardships for the Palestinian people, who have been living under Israeli occupation since 1967. President Carter, who recently monitored the Palestinian elections, expressed hope that, "the people of Palestine…who already suffer…under Israeli occupation…will not suffer because they are deprived of a right to pay their school teachers, policemen, welfare workers, health workers and provide food for people."

In 2005, the Palestinian unemployment rate was 27% (with rates as high as 70% in southern Gaza) and the poverty rate 48%, according to the World Bank. Of the 3.6 million Palestinian living in the Occupied Territories, 2.5 million people live on less than $2 per day, with 50% of Palestinians dependent on food aid. The Palestinian Authority is the largest single employer in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and relies on foreign aid to stay afloat. Nearly all institutions (schools, health care, security bodies) rely on some form of foreign aid.

Last year, the Palestinian people received $606 million (500 euros) from the European Union. They also received $200 million from the US, almost all of which is administered and implemented through contracts awarded and overseen by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), in comparison to the more than $2 billion in direct aid that Israel receives annually. USAID funds assist the Palestinian people with infrastructure and capacity building, supporting higher education and increasing economic growth. Additionally, Israel has said it will withhold $55 million in tax and customs duty payments, earmarked for salaries of Palestinian civil servants, in violation of the 1993 Oslo Accords.

    US CONGRESSIONAL RESOLUTIONS
There has been a flurry of recent action in the US Congress about US aid to thePalestinian people. The Senate has already passed a resolution sponsored by
    Senator John Thune (R-SD).

Two bills have already been introduced into the House. Passage of these bills will tie the hands of the executive branch and would contradict US foreign policy objectives of assisting in negotiating peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

The most far reaching of the group of bills, "The Palestinian Democracy Support Act," was introduced by House Committee on International Relations’ members Congressman Tom Lantos (D-CA) and Congresswoman Illeana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL). In their bill, inability to live up to a litany of congressionally defined democracy qualifiers would end American assistance to the Palestinians, prohibit Palestinian diplomats entry to the U.S., would designate Palestinian territories as a terrorist sanctuary, and reduce our nation’s UN based on the percentage of money spent on UN Palestinian bodies.

Although not as far reaching as Lantos’ bill one introduced by Congressman Vito Fossella (R-NY) would similarly cut aid to the Palestinians.

    TAKE ACTION TODAY
Take action below by contacting Congress, the White House and the US State Department letting them know you oppose efforts to end US assistance to the Palestinian people.
