Dear NAAP-NY,
2010 has proven to be a year of strategic development for NAAP.
In early 2010, the NAAP National Assembly adopted 3-year Strategic Plan aimed at developing a sustainable and scalable institution capable of advancing a prosperous and influential community across our national network.
The plan is grounded in 8 strategic imperatives; each of which aims to strengthen NAAP's infrastructure and ability to achieve our collective objectives:
1) Grow an active and engaged membership base through concentrated focus on the primary (emerging/ developing professionals) & secondary target groups (established professionals)
2) Foster leadership through outreach efforts to local community including youth/ students and developing transitioning roles for current NAAP leadership, active volunteer base
3) Focus on innovation through ensuring member ideas and energy are cultivated and maximized
4) Strengthen standing of organization by developing events and programs focused on the evolving needs of the community and complimenting org landscape
5) Solidify national entity to support and encourage chapters and growth of national network
6) Improve governance to ensure sustainability of local and national institution
7) Enhance brand identity through aligned and enhanced communication of NAAP vision and mission
8) Operationalize fundraising through cohesive national and local campaigns
Chapters around the country will be focused on implementing plans which support and connect to these imperatives.
We achieved so much over the past years and only with your continued support, passion and volunteerism can we hope to achieve these lofty goals.

Check it Right, You ain't White!
Across the nation we partnered with dozens of Arab-American organizations to ensure
that our community is counted for the 2010 Census! The collective
awareness campaign aimed to show the government that our community is
growing and help Arab-Americans compete for some $400 billion in
government funds for community programs, schools, parks and roads.
To raise awareness and ensure continuity across our community responses Dandana TV aired the following PSA segment interviewing NAAP members and other community leaders!

NY City Hall Honors Arab-Americans!
On June 24th, NAAP-NY's very own Sarab Al-Jijakli was among a select group of community leaders who were recognized by the NYC Council for their outstanding contributions to NYC.
Hosted by Councilman Danny Drumm and Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., and MC'd by Host committee chair Moustafa ElSheik this day marked the first time Arab Heritage was formally celebrated by the City Council!
While the celebration was moved across the street from City Hall due to an emergency City council budget meeting, the house was packed with over 300 people who listened intently to the awardees speeches, enjoyed the sounds of Zikrayat and of course munched on a delicious Arabic buffet!

Book Club Continues to grow!
Since it's launch in March the NAAP-NY Book Club has been a great success! So far we've read and discussed amazing books; The great novel "The Palace Walk" by Naguib Mahfouz, the classic of modern Arab history "The Arab Awakening" by George Antonious, "The Crusades through Arab Eyes" by Amin Malouf, Edward Said's "Orientalism" to name a few.

Members come together to learn how to get involved in NAAP!
On August 4th, NAAP-NY held a Member Orientation meeting. With all the events and activities NAAP-NY is involved in, its sometimes difficult for members to find their place and role in the organization.
Approximately 30 new members came to the meeting and learned about how NAAP-NY events are organized, our history, our vision and what our mission is. The discussion provided newcomers with insight into our mission and goals - both locally and nationally.

Calling all New Parents! NAAP-NY's Parent Group Unveiled
Along with a growing
community comes change in member needs. We've watched in excitement as
many of our long time volunteers and members have become new parents
over the last several years and we've heard from many that they would
like to see a support group formed. So, this month we happily unveiled
our new Parent Group, the culturally relevant network of new
parents providing peer support for one another.
The Parent Group aims to gather members who are parents to young
children or are expecting young children in the near future. The group
will plan play dates, provide fun activities for the children to help
them connect to their culture and roots and discuss important topics
pertinent to young children within the Arab context.
For those interested
in joining the NAAP-NY Parent Group, please email us and you'll be added to the group
discussion list.

NY chapter hosts NAAP National Assembly meeting!

The theme of the weekend was to push forward on implementing our NAAP-National strategic plan. Specifically, the agenda covered topics such as fundraising for non-profits, national website redesign vendor recommendations, enhancing the local-national federation model, optimizing volunteer and member contribution opportunities to name a few.
The next National Assembly meeting will take place in Houston next January.
