_________________________________________________________________
* JAMES ASHER:
James is pretty much a new commer to the world of stand-up but he's done a
number of plays and shows including originating and performing the award
winning play about Arab identity called "Sajjil" in the NYC
international Fringe Festival. Other credits include the NYC and West Coast
premieres of The Laramie Project by Moises Kaufman as well as the national
tour of Gross Indecency also by Kaufman; the title role in the national
tour of Steve Martin's Picasso at the Lapin Agile at the
FordsTheater in Washington DC; Shakespeare festivals and regional theaters
across the country; and character voices for HBO animation
* OMAR KOURY:
He's a Gemini and loves the color blue! Omar was born in our nation's
capitol to a Jordanian father and a Scotish/English mother. He's been in
New York since 1990 and his acting credits include the films Jesus' Son and
The Devil's Advocate. He's been on television's One Life to Live and
Guiding Light. He's had appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman
and Conan O'Brien.
* HELEN MAALIK:
She hasn't told her mother that she's a Stand-Up comedienne and probably
never will. She was born in Damascus, Syria, and came to the United States
at the age of 7. It wasn't easy growing up as an Arab kid in this country.
She got relentlessly taunted by kids and developed quick wit and a sharp
tongue. She even had to beat up a couple of boys in the 8th grade. Helen
Maalik is a Stand-Up comedienne in New York City. She performs regularly at
comedy clubs throughout the
city. She puts an audience at ease as soon as she steps on stage with her
charming and subtle presence, but wait till she starts talking. She throws
jabs at her husband, marriage and being from the Middle East. Her well
crafted material and sarcastic wit is giving this up-and-coming comedienne
an edge and a fresh voice to comedy. She's not afraid to say what's on her
mind and will convince you that she's just an average Arab girl, that's
also a Comedian?. sssshhhh, don't tell her mother.
* NASRY MALAK:
Nasry is a very funny comic who plays clubs and colleges all over the
country. He is currently producing his own one person show "The Morning
After Pill" about his life as an Arab-American after 9/11. Recently, he was
featured on CNN as one of todays prominent Arab comics.
* DEAN OBEIDALLAH:
This half Arab half Sicilian comic has written jokes that have appeared on
Saturday Night Live's "Weekend update" and CBS' Late, Late Show with Craig
Kilborn. Dean Obeidallah appears regularly at comedy clubs in New York
City.
* MAYSOON ZAYID:
Maysoon is "a Palestinian, Muslim, virgin with cerebral palsy, from New
Jersey." That's exactly how the comedian introduces herslf at the top of
her set. Maysoon is an established comedian who has worked in top NYC clubs
including Carolines and Gotham. She has also made television
appearances on MTV and As the World Turns. This past fall Maysoon spent
four months in Palestine where she started a children's program for
disabled, wounded, and at risk refugee children and performed stand up (a
first in many of the cities) in English and Arabic in Ramallah, East
Jerusalem, and Gaza.
A 100% Arab-American line-up ...
