Civil Rights Town Hall Forum 4/18

Hello NAAP-NY!

Since September 11, 2001, Arabs, Muslims and South Asians have been confronted with increased discrimination, racial profiling, defamation by public figures and a breach of civil liberties. New immigration and security policies have left many wondering what their rights are. Some have suffered as a direct result of these changes, while others credit the agencies with doing the best they can.

On April 18, representatives from the FBI and Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (BICE) will engage in an open dialogue with Arab, Muslim and South Asian Americans. The purpose of the forum is to offer a comfortable and safe space for these communities to voice grievances directly to public officials. It will also allow public officials to shed light on policies – both new and old – including the controversial Bush-sanctioned warrantless wiretapping, the "no fly" lists put in place post 9/11, and the implications of the current immigrant policy debate.

The Forum is a co-sponsored initiative by a number of Arab, Muslim and South Asian organizations, including: Council on American-Islamic Relations – NY, American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Islamic Council of North America, COPO, Arab American Association of New York, Masjid Al-Noor, Staten Island Islamic Cultural Center, PTV Prime, Pakistan News, and the Network of Arab-American Professionals of NY.
