AMP: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the Arab-American Mentorship Program (AMP)?

In an effort to better serve the Arab-American student community, NAAP-NY’s Student Affairs Committee has established a Mentorship Program that connects students seeking career guidance with Arab-American professionals in their particular field of interest. Through the Program, we hope that students will gain invaluable insight that will help them define and advance their career goals. We also hope that this program will enhance the leadership skills of our Mentors and provide them the opportunity to contribute to the Arab youth.

How is the Program structured?

Once Students and Mentors fill out the AMP on-line application form [available on NAAP’s website], their information is placed in our database. We will make every effort to find the most suitable Student-Mentor assignment based on the information provided. Once this assignment is made, NAAP-NY’s AMP Coordinators will contact each Student and Mentor to welcome them to the program and briefly introduce them to each other.

Participants will be responsible for deciding on the means of communication. We require that each Student and Mentor keep in touch through e-mail or phone, and make plans to meet at least once in their area of choice (i.e. coffee place or office, etc). The AMP Coordinators will occasionally contact participants to check on their status and will be available at all times to ensure that the Student-Mentor relationship is satisfactory to both participants. However, it is up to each participant to decide the frequency of contact and how the advisory relationship will develop and progress. We highly encourage both Students and Mentors to update us on their developments, and particularly on any successes encountered.

Who is eligible to apply to be a Mentor?

To become a Mentor, you must be a NAAP member who is willing to volunteer time to advise a student interested in your particular career path or field of study. Mentors may be employed individuals or graduate students with sufficient expertise in the area in which the Student wishes to be advised. All Mentors must fill out the on-line application form for consideration.

Who is eligible to apply to be a Mentee?

This program has been established primarily to serve undergraduate students at any college or university in the New York and New Jersey area. However, this program is also open to graduate students or other NAAP members simply interested in having a Mentor. In this case, however, mentorship may be restricted by the availability of NAAP members with sufficient expertise in that field or career path. All students must fill out the on-line application form for consideration.

Does the Program provide any further opportunities for exchange?

Students and Mentors are responsible for maintaining regular exchanges. In addition, NAAP-NY’s Student Affairs Committee may organize occasional networking events geared towards the Mentorship Program participants.

Application Process

Candidates will be matched based on the Student's interests as well as the Mentor’s area of expertise.

Application forms are available online @ www.naaponline.org/ny/mentor.asp.
Assignments occur year round. Submitting an application does not guarantee you a Student-Mentor assignment. Your information will be kept in our database until we are able find a suitable match. The waiting time varies on a case-by-case basis; however our Program Coordinators will make every effort to respond in a timely manner.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact NAAP-NY’s Student Affairs Coordinators at NYstudentaffairs@naaponline.org or 212-592-4052. Thank you for participating. We look forward to hearing from you.
