Organization
NAAP-DC functions through the work of 8 committees, each of which is tasked with specific and well-defined objectives that are in agreement with NAAP's overall mission statement. Any member of NAAP-DC is welcome to join one or more committees. Each committee has a chairperson, who is elected by the members at a general meeting, and a coordinator, who is elected only by members of the committee. The chairperson and coordinator are responsible for ensuring that the committee remains active and keep other committees and all members informed of their planned activities. This loose structure evolved from an even less restrictive one which was used during NAAP-DC's first year. As the number of events NAAP-DC planned grew from one every few months to several per month, it was decided in a general meeting that additional structure was needed in the organization. A break-out committee of 5 people then proposed the current structure, which was agreed to by members at the following general meeting. This structure is still in use today.
The General Meeting
All major decisions taken by NAAP-DC are made at a general meeting held typically twice per month on Sunday evenings at local-area cafes or restaurants. These decisions include what events NAAP will plan, the budget for events, events NAAP will co-sponsor, and also changes to the stucture of the organization as it continues to evolve. Meetings are typically attended by 12 to 20 people, although minutes are sent to all members of NAAP. Any member of NAAP is invited and encouraged to attend a general meeting to become more involved with the planning of the organization's activities.
