Committees

How to join a Committee

Any member of NAAP-DC is welcome to join one or more Committees. Each Committee has a volunteer facilitator. The facilitator is responsible for ensuring that the Committee remains active and keep other committees and all members informed of their planned activities. To join a specific Committee, send a blank email to the appropriate Committee (see below). You will receive a reply with information on how you can join and to learn more about their activities and meetings. Please note, to be added to a Committee email discussion group or become a committee member, you must have completed the NAAP online membership form. Please visit www.naaponline.org/membership to access the form. If you have any specific questions or ideas feel free to email one of the Committee Facilitators listed below.

  Media Outreach Committee
The Media Committee works to create press releases for NAAP-DC events and to ensure that this information reaches appropriate media outlets.

  Cultural/Outreach Committee
The Cultural committee works to promote the Arabic culture within and outside the Arab-American community. In the past, this committee has organized art exhibits, including its original production The Naji al-Ali Exhibit. It has recently organized a Sunday School where the Arabic language and culture are taught. The Outreach committee works to organize volunteer efforts where NAAP members can serve those in need in the Washington DC area. Previous activities include feeding the homeless, organizing a toy drive, and volunteering to work at an inn for ill children.

  Community Service Committee
The Community Service Committee aims to provide our local communities (the greater Washington, DC-area) with support, time and effort that will better our relationships and continue to provide a positive face to Arab-Americans. The agenda for this committee is strictly non-profit and includes volunteer work with charitable organizations and efforts throughout various venues in Southern Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington, DC.

  Political Committee
This committee works to engage Arab-Americans in the US political system by registering Arab-American voters and coordinating political activities with other organizations who work to promote the interests of our community both home and abroad.

  Social Committee
This committee works to organize social events for our members. Past activities include haflehs, get-togethers, card tournaments, bowling nights, and picnics. Many of our members first become interested in NAAP after attending a social event.

  Marketing Committee
This committee works to monitor the US media for news articles and opinion pieces that are either inaccurate in their factual content or biased and do not present an objective perspective on issues concerning our community. The committee also works to encourage Arab-Americans to be more media savvy.

Finance Committee The Finance Committee is responsible for maintaining NAAP-DC’s financial records, budgeting for activities and events, and ensuring that the DC chapter remains in good financial standing.

  Membership Committee
The Membership Committee aims to expand and improve participation among the members of the NAAP-DC chapter. This committee also identifies ways in which NAAP-DC can respond to the needs of its members effectively. It consists of members representing various membership interests: cultural, social, marketing, community service, outreach and political committees.
