Needed:
Arab-American Families for ABC Television Series!
ABC
is currently working on a groundbreaking new series that celebrates the American
family, based on a major award-winning British format. The programs are
portraits of American life and I am looking for Arab American families to
participate because I feel that they are often not well represented on primetime
television. If you are a two parent family with young or teenage children, at
least two of whom are over the age of eight, you can be on our show. If you have
ever wondered what it would be like to be part of a different family, if the
grass is greener, this is an opportunity which may change how you feel about
your life. This is a chance to see how another family lives.
If you're
interested, please call Susie Banikarim as soon as possible. We're looking for
families all the time.

Needed:
Personal Subject Matter for Original Arab-American
Drama
Zawaya, a non-profit Arab-American cultural
organization in the Bay Area, is planning to write and perform an original drama
in the English language to showcase the Arab-American experience. This
theatrical production will be presented on February 26, 2005.
For this,
we need your help. YOU, the true Arab Americans, will supply the subject matter
with your own stories. HOW can you do this? You have choices:
You can
write (up to three pages) or speak on tape (up to five minutes). You can use
English or Arabic. You identify yourself or be anonymous. You can audition to
play yourself, or Zawaya can train someone to play your part.
WHAT should
you tell us about? Dreams, attitudes, true-life experiences from your life in
America. A special memory from back home. You may want to share journal entries
or creative writing. As a starting point - to set you thinking but not to limit
your thinking - consider these questions:
* What stereotypes - true or
false - have you had to live with? * Have you faced discrimination in
school, workplace, job selection and advancement, and social
interactions? * How do Americans perceive you as an Arab-American, and
how have they shown you that perception? Have you found unlooked-for support
when least expected? * What do you like and dislike about being an
Arab-American? About the Bay Area Arab-American community? About juggling two
cultures?
ZAWAYA will stitch your stories together as vignettes,
interwoven with song and dance and poetry. The dramatic production will be
professionally directed by Denmo Ibrahim and Maher Sabry, and coordinated by
Nabila Mango and Haya Shawwa.
Please make your sbumissions by September 1 to Zawaya (see
below) When: Wednesday September 1, 2004 Where:
Zawaya, c/o Nabila Mango, 311 41st Street, San Mateo, CA

MTV
documentary featuring young Arab Americans
MTV is
producing a documentary show that features multi-cultural young adults. It will
focus on young American Muslims/Arab Americans caught between two cultures --
struggling to maintain a balance between personal beliefs and family
traditions.
Specifically, they are looking to approach young adults - age
16 and 27 - with the utmost sensitivity. These people should be energetic and
outspoken youths who want to be on television, and want to tell their stories.
The program is concerned with presenting a balanced portrayal of the struggles
of young Arab Americans and above all, to listen and learn from their
words.
Do you know of any young adults who would be interested in
appearing on television?
Do you know of any families who are outspoken
and want to express their point of views on television in an honest, documentary
format?
